About this place
The Cemetery of Premià de Mar (Cementiri de Premià de Mar) is the municipal cemetery of Premià de Mar, a coastal town in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia. Located on Carrer de la Plaça, right next to the town's football field, it was established in the second half of the 19th century and expanded in stages through the early 20th century, a history still visible in the layout of the grounds today.
How was the cemetery originally laid out?
The oldest part of the cemetery was considerably smaller than what visitors see now. Its original boundary reached only as far as today's Carrer de Núria, and it was a later, more modern expansion that extended the grounds all the way to Carrer de la Mercè. This older section is itself split into two areas, a southern and a northern part, reflecting the successive phases of development the site went through as the town's population grew.
What historic tombs stand out here?
The cemetery is listed in Catalonia's inventory of architectural heritage largely because of two monumental family pantheons built in the historicist style around the turn of the 20th century.
The first, the Puig Pantheon, was built in 1899 by local master builder Pere Andreu i Cisa for the wealthy Puig family. It is executed in the neo-Gothic style, and its door is fitted with colored stained glass depicting biblical scenes, framed between two Latin inscriptions. It remains one of the most recognizable structures on the grounds.
The second notable tomb, the Roura Pantheon, was designed to echo the form of small Romanesque churches, scaling down the style's characteristic volumes and details. A memorial plaque dated 1926, dedicated to Juan Roura Nasplada, survives on the structure, giving at least this part of the family tomb a precise date.
How large is the cemetery today?
The cemetery currently holds 2,790 niches, 15 family pantheons and 54 columbaria. In 2016, the local council announced a further expansion, adding 48 niches and 49 columbaria over roughly 215 square meters, a response to the growing demand from the town's residents.
Where is it and how should visitors approach it?
The cemetery is located at Carrer de la Plaça, s/n, 08330 Premià de Mar, right beside the municipal football pitch. It remains an active municipal burial ground rather than a museum or conventional tourist attraction, so visitors should keep this in mind and show appropriate respect toward people visiting the graves of relatives.
