Castle of Teuven

About this place

Castle of Teuven — also known locally as De Draeck, De Hoef or De Hoof — stands just north of the village of Teuven, in the municipality of Voeren (Fourons), Limburg province, close to the Gulp river. It's one of those quietly well-preserved rural Belgian estates that combines a long noble history with a very practical modern-day use.

What does the castle look like?

The building follows a U-shaped floor plan, with a corner tower set at its western angle. Until roughly 1864 the whole structure was surrounded by a moat, a feature common to residences of this kind in the region that gradually lost its defensive purpose and became purely decorative. The current building dates from the mid-17th century and replaced an earlier residence of the lords of Teuven on the same site. The front facade of the southwest wing was reworked in the 19th century, and that later styling is still visible today.

Who owned the castle over the centuries?

The lordship of Teuven can be traced back to at least 1370, when it belonged to a certain Mathilion. Ownership then passed through several noble families: the Gronsveld family and the van Brempt family held it during the 15th century, before it came into the hands of the Draeck family in the early 17th century. It was under the De Draeck family that the present stone castle was built to replace the older residence. The family kept the estate until 1792, residing at Teuven Castle throughout that period.

What happened to the castle afterward?

Following the end of the De Draeck ownership and the 19th-century remodeling of its facade, the castle changed hands several more times until 1985, when it was acquired by the Flemish Community. Since then it has operated as a hotel and restaurant, a use that has kept the building in good repair while opening it up to the public — not just as a monument to admire from the outside, but as a place people can actually stay and eat in.

Is the castle protected?

Yes. The building holds protected monument status under Belgian heritage law, which safeguards its historic architecture, including the corner tower and the characteristic U-shaped layout.
