About this place
The Castle of Barbacena (Castelo de Barbacena) is a former medieval fortress in the municipality of Elvas, in Portugal's Alentejo region, close to the Spanish border. It is listed as a Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público), a designation it has held since 1967.
Where is the Castle of Barbacena?
The fortress stands in the village of Barbacena, part of the civil parish of Barbacena e Vila Fernando, in the municipality of Elvas, Portalegre District. Its coordinates are roughly 38.960° N, 7.294° W. Elvas is the main town nearby and the natural base for exploring the surrounding border villages.
What is the history of the castle?
King Sancho II definitively took the settlement from the Moors in the first half of the 13th century. Portuguese sources suggest the site may have grown out of an even older pre-Roman hillfort (castro). The lands were granted to Estêvão Anes, chancellor to Afonso III, and the new lord issued the first town charter (foral) in 1273, still during that king's reign. The first fortification is linked to the time of Afonso III.
A new chapter began in the early 16th century. On 15 December 1519, Manuel I gave the town a fresh foral and ordered the castle rebuilt. By 1536 Barbacena was an entailed estate (morgadio) held by Jorge Henriques, huntsman to King John III, who is credited with starting the construction work on the castle.
What role did it play in the wars with Spain?
In the 17th century, during the Restoration War for Portuguese independence, the defences were upgraded. Modern bastions, suited to artillery, were added. Standing right on the frontier gave the fortress real strategic value, and accounts say it held out against Spanish attacks.
What can you see today?
The castle is now largely a ruin, so it suits visitors who enjoy raw, unrestored fortifications rather than those looking for exhibitions or a visitor centre. Look for the mix of medieval elements and later bastioned lines, which show how defensive design changed along this border.
Portuguese media have reported plans to convert the castle into a boutique hotel, so check the current access situation before you go.
