Castelo de Doiras

Castelo de Doiras is a medieval fortress perched on a rocky outcrop in the municipality of Cervantes, in the province of Lugo, within the Os Ancares area of Galicia, Spain. Note that the municipality's name has no direct connection to the writer Miguel de Cervantes — it is a local place name of the Galician mountains. The castle sits at an altitude of over 700 metres, between the small valleys of the Rego de Vilarello and the Rego de Riamonte streams, giving it a commanding view over the surrounding terrain.

When was the castle built?

The fortress dates from the second half of the 15th century. Its construction is attributed to Diego Pérez-Osorio y Guzmán, the first lord of Cervantes and Villacid, who is believed to have ordered it built at a strategic point guarding the entrance into Galicia along the old Roman road known as Via XIX, which linked Asturica (present-day Astorga) with Lugo. For centuries this same route also carried one of the branches of the Way of St James, so the castle effectively controlled the flow of pilgrims and merchants entering Galician territory from the east.

Ownership of the property changed hands several times over the centuries: it belonged at different points to the Moirón family and later to the Counts of Grajal de Campos. In more recent history, the Fundación Xosé Soto de Fión held the castle from 2001 until January 2024, when it was purchased jointly by the Cervantes town council and the Provincial Council (Diputación) of Lugo for 960,000 euros, returning the monument to local public ownership.

What does the castle look like?

Castelo de Doiras has a rectangular floor plan measuring roughly 25 by 21 metres. Its walls are built of thick slate masonry, up to 1.5 metres thick and 8 metres high, giving the structure the heavy, defensive profile typical of Galician fortresses from this period. The entrance is set beneath a semicircular arch. The most distinctive feature of the complex, however, is its 16-metre keep tower (torre del homenaje), which survives in excellent condition and is likewise entered through a semicircular archway. This tower dominates the surrounding valley and can be spotted from a considerable distance.

What legend surrounds the castle?

A local legend tied to Castelo de Doiras tells the story of Aldara, a young woman said to have lived at the castle while betrothed to be married. According to the tale, she vanished one day under mysterious circumstances, transformed into a doe, and was later unknowingly hunted down by her own brother. The story remains part of the oral tradition of the Os Ancares area and is still recounted by local guides to visitors touring the castle grounds.
