Castell de Jorba

Castell de Jorba is a medieval castle overlooking the village of Jorba in the Catalan comarca of Anoia. It crowns the top of Guàrdia mountain, on whose slope the settlement grew, and its walls have long watched over the Òdena basin and the routes leading into it.

What is the history behind the castle?

The fortress was built at the end of the 10th century as a control point for the county of Osona-Manresa, which had just conquered the surrounding territory and needed to secure access to the Òdena basin. When the region passed under the dominion of the county of Barcelona, the castle was entrusted to the Jorba family, who served as its castellans. The family's most notable member, Guerau de Jorba, was ennobled as Baron of Jorba in the 12th century. As a trusted adviser to Count Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona, he took a personal part in the conquests of Lleida, Tortosa and Tarragona, and his influence on Catalan politics of the time was considerable.

In the first half of the 14th century, the Castellolí family took over as castellans, beginning a period in which the castle changed hands repeatedly. The fortress played a part in the Catalan Civil War, falling to Royalist forces in 1475. Its most dramatic moment, however, came in 1835, when Carlist forces blew it up during the First Carlist War.
