Where does this fortress come from?

The building on record dates to 1478, though it likely stands on the site of an older defensive tower first documented in 976, linked to the castle of Olèrdola. For centuries, Castell de Canyelles served as an auxiliary stronghold supporting Olèrdola's castle, while also guarding the natural route connecting Vilafranca del Penedès to the coast near Vilanova i la Geltrú.

Who ruled the castle?

The fortress long belonged to the barons of Canyelles, who in peacetime collected a toll (pontatge) on crossings over the nearby stream. In 1393, King Joan I granted the castle to Guillem de Sagarriga, surgeon to the royal household. Soon after, ownership passed to the wealthy Marquet family, who held it for several generations, before it eventually passed to the Terrè family.

A 19th-century restoration

Much of the castle's present appearance comes from a restoration begun in 1852 by Ramon Josep de Bouffard. The work was completed in 1858 by his son, Ferran de Bouffard, who also expanded the sacristy of the castle chapel and finished the building's front facade.

A new chapter

In October 2025, the castle entered a new chapter when Dr. Marisa López-Teijón donated it, along with its surrounding gardens, to the municipality of Canyelles. The handover was formalised through a notarial deed during a public institutional ceremony, opening a fresh chapter after centuries of private ownership.
