Cal Balaguer

Cal Balaguer is the ruin of an old Catalan farmhouse and the small rural settlement built around it, in the municipality of Castellet i la Gornal, right in the heart of Foix Natural Park, in the Alt Penedès comarca (Barcelona province). Abandoned for decades, the site is now mainly a stop for hikers tracing the remnants of Penedès's old mountain farming life.

The settlement sits on high ground within the Serra Mala, at roughly 250-260 metres above sea level, inside Foix Natural Park — one of the wilder corners of Alt Penedès. There is no road access, electricity, or water supply left on site today, which is part of why the ruins feel so cut off from the surrounding villages.

Cal Balaguer was never a single house — it was the largest farm in a small cluster of homesteads scattered across the surrounding hills, alongside neighbours such as Can Gat Negre, Cal Pastor Xic, Cal Pigot, and Cal Feliciana Vell. The main house stood out for its size, with outbuildings and a perimeter wall together forming a wide courtyard. The buildings were raised from stone, earth, and lime, materials typical of rural Penedès construction, in a style associated with the 18th and 19th centuries. There was no church or other monumental structure here — this was purely a working agricultural settlement built around farming and livestock.

How did the settlement come to be?

The land Cal Balaguer stood on fell under the direct authority of the lords of Castellet, the local feudal rulers of this stretch of Penedès. No founding records have survived, so it's not possible to pin an exact date on the earliest buildings. What is clear is that, over generations, the families of Cal Balaguer and its neighbouring farms made their living from the steep, modest plots typical of the Penedès highlands.

Why was it abandoned?

Cal Balaguer shared the fate of dozens of similarly humble mountain settlements along the coastal and pre-coastal ranges of Penedès, all of which emptied out definitively during the 1960s and 1970s. Several factors combined at once: recurring forest fires that ravaged the area, a mass exodus of residents toward the cities in search of work, and a lack of roads and basic services, made worse by institutional neglect. Today every building on site is in ruins — none are in a condition that could realistically be restored — and the settlement carries no formal heritage protection.

How do you get there?

Cal Balaguer is reached on foot, typically starting from the nearby villages of Clariana or Torrelletes — the Torrelletes route is the shorter of the two, at under a kilometre. The site appears on several hiking-trail maps covering Foix Natural Park and is a popular waypoint for visitors walking longer routes through this part of Alt Penedès. Sturdy footwear is worth packing, since the terrain is hilly and the settlement itself lies well away from any paved road.
