Cascata del Silan

Cascata del Silan in Bassano del Grappa, province of Vicenza, Veneto, is a hidden waterfall set in the foothills of the Pedemontana del Grappa. It is formed by the Silan stream as it descends from the hamlet of Valrovina to San Michele — both part of the municipality of Bassano del Grappa. The name Silan comes from the Cimbrian language and means "the place where the waters flow."

How to get there and how long is the walk?

The starting point is the hamlet of San Michele. The waterfall itself can be reached in around 20 minutes of easy walking alongside the stream. Those who want to explore the full valley can follow the loop via the Hermitage of San Bovo and Valrovina — a route of over 11 kilometres with around 666 metres of elevation gain that takes three to four hours. The trails are well marked and require no specialist experience.

What to see at the waterfall

The Silan valley is an oasis of calm, enclosed by lush ferns and moss, where the sound of the rushing stream replaces the noise of nearby Bassano del Grappa. The cool waterfall appears almost unexpectedly amid dense greenery, in a landscape that feels genuinely remote despite being so close to the town.

Not far from the waterfall, on a small rise, stands the oratory of San Bovo with a hermit's cell attached. Traces of hermits living here date back to the 15th century, while graffiti on nearby rocks point to settlements as far back as the Iron Age. Alongside the stream, visitors can also find remnants of the Via Armentaria, a Roman-era paved path used for transhumance, with a ford of aligned stones and drainage gutters cut into either side to carry away rain and spring water.
