Casa de Postas is an 18th-century building in Tembleque, a small town in the province of Toledo, Castile-La Mancha. It stands along the old road heading south toward Andalusia, and for decades served travelers as a place to rest and change postal horses.
What is this place?
An inscription carved into the upper right corner of the façade points to the year 1777. The building functioned as "aposento de las caballerías apostadas en los caminos" — stabling and lodging for the postal horses and couriers working the route to Andalusia. Back when changing teams and resting travelers required dedicated infrastructure, Casa de Postas was a key stop along the way.
Over time its purpose shifted: it served as Civil Guard barracks, rented housing, a workshop school, and a community gathering space.
What does the building look like?
It's a rectangular structure measuring roughly 60 by 40 meters, divided into three sections across two stories. The taller central section holds an arched entrance portal, a spacious hallway, and the start of a staircase. The side wings, separated by small patios, housed residences and stables — marked by numerous windows and balconies.
Why is it on the endangered heritage list?
On June 15, 2022, Casa de Postas was added to Hispania Nostra's Red List of Endangered Heritage as a site with significant historical value requiring protection. The entrance façade and its surroundings remain in relatively good condition, but the side roofs have collapsed, and the whole structure is at risk of further deterioration. Entry to the interior is prohibited for safety reasons.
