Capela do Senhor das Almas

Galveias, Portugal

About this place

Capela do Senhor das Almas is a small chapel near Galveias, in the municipality of Ponte de Sor in Portugal's Alentejo region. It stands beside the national road linking Galveias and Ponte de Sor, and it is one of the area's religious heritage sites. The modest building has a long history rooted in the devotion of travellers.

Where is the chapel?

The chapel lies about 2 km from the village of Galveias, right next to the national road to Ponte de Sor. It sits outside the village centre, along a route travellers have used for a long time. It is easy to spot from the road, and a short stop needs no detour.

What does it look like?

It is a simple building. The facade has a cut-out, profiled cornice set between two masonry pilasters, and ornamental spires finish the design. A small annex on the left serves as the sacristy. The whole is compact and unpretentious, typical of rural Alentejo chapels.

What is the history of Capela do Senhor das Almas?

The current building dates back at least to the late 16th century. Important works were carried out in the 18th century, and more recent ones in the 1960s. The origins of the site are older still. Accounts describe a small niche here, greatly cherished by travellers. Their devotion led to the building of the chapel and its sacristy.

What can you see inside?

The annex on the left may have been the original chapel. It holds a masonry altar with a bas-relief, where you can still make out figures resembling the typical depictions of souls in Purgatory. This fits the chapel's dedication ("Lord of the Souls").

At the centre of the main altar hangs a painting on the theme of the souls. It is the work of Álvaro Eliseu, a painter from Covilhã. It was placed there in 1954 during a restoration of the chapel sponsored by Commendador Assis Roda.
