Canal Faial-Pico/Sector Pico

Madalena, Portugal

About this place

Canal Faial-Pico/Sector Pico is a marine protected area off the west coast of Pico Island in the Azores, right in front of the town of Madalena. It is part of the archipelago's protected-area network and covers open water plus two small islets that are visible from the Madalena waterfront.

What is this area?

The Azores regional nature parks classify the Pico sector as a Protected Area for Resource Management. It spans roughly 6,689 hectares. Next to it lies a separate Faial sector of about 17,385 hectares on the other side of the channel. Together they form the protection system for the strait between the two islands.

What can you see nearby?

The two best-known features are the islets Ilhéu em Pé ("standing islet") and Ilhéu Deitado ("lying islet"). The names describe their shapes as seen from shore. They are the remains of a volcano worn down by marine abrasion, the grinding action of waves. The islets are also part of the Ilhéus da Madalena, a Natura 2000 site (special area of conservation) that has carried that status since June 1995.

The area also has geological value. It is listed among the priority marine geosites of the Azores UNESCO Global Geopark, so it appeals not only to birdwatchers but also to anyone curious about the volcanic history of the islands.

Wildlife

The islets serve as a refuge and nesting ground for seabirds, including the common tern (Sterna hirundo). The regional parks authority lists the area as an important habitat for the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). Among plants, it names Azorina vidalii and Spergularia azorica, species tied to the Azorean coast.

Can you dive or swim here?

The Madalena coast is popular with water-sports fans, but conditions call for care. The Faial-Pico Channel is known for strong currents, and divers leaving the sheltered bay by the islets should be especially cautious. Because this is a protected area, check local rules with the Pico Island Nature Park or a local tour operator before entering the water or heading out by boat.
