Miradouro do Monte Carneiro

Horta (Matriz), Portugal

About this place

Miradouro do Monte Carneiro is a hilltop viewpoint directly above Horta, the main town on Faial in the Azores. From the summit of this old volcanic cone you look down on the bay, the marina and the town, with Pico mountain rising across the channel.

What can you see from Monte Carneiro?

The view takes in all of Horta: the colourful harbour, the yacht marina and the buildings strung along the bay. Across the water stands Pico, the highest mountain in Portugal. When visibility is good you can also pick out São Jorge and Graciosa. The summit sits at roughly 270 m above sea level and is open on nearly all sides, so the panorama is close to a full circle.

Information panels at the top explain the surroundings. The hill is a former volcanic cone, and its shape shows it.

How do you get to Monte Carneiro?

A paved road runs to the top and is open to both cars and walkers. It is narrow and winding, so take care at junctions. The route is signposted, but follow the signs rather than relying on a satnav, which may initially point to the wrong spot.

At the top there is a car park and a few benches around the turning circle. Spaces can run short at busy times. You can also walk up from central Horta or from the island's interior. The climb from town is steep in places, with gradients of about 10 to 20 percent, so cyclists should expect a real effort.

When is the best time to visit?

Pick a clear part of the day, because the view of Pico depends on cloud. The mountain often hides even in summer, so check the forecast in the morning if your plans are flexible. Many visitors recommend sunrise, when the sky over Faial turns colour and the light hits the harbour. The summit is exposed, so bring a hat and sunscreen on sunny days.

What else is nearby?

Monte Carneiro pairs easily with a walk through Horta: the marina with its yachtsmen's murals, Peter Café Sport and the waterfront. Other Faial viewpoints are close by, such as Miradouro da Nossa Senhora da Conceição, from which Monte Carneiro is itself visible.
