Câmara Municipal de Avis

Avis, Portugal

About this place

Câmara Municipal de Avis is the town hall of the municipality of Avis, a small town in the Alto Alentejo region (Portalegre district). The administration sits in the historic centre at Largo Cândido dos Reis 11, and local studies describe it as occupying the former Palácio do Prior-Mor, a building that once also served as a theatre.

What should you know about Avis town hall?

This is a working municipal office rather than a museum, so most visitors simply admire the building from outside. Its real appeal is the setting: it stands in the old town, with several landmarks within a short walk. It makes a handy anchor point for exploring Avis on foot.

What is there to see nearby?

On the square by the parish church (Igreja Matriz) you will find the pelourinho, a medieval pillory column carrying the municipal emblem, an eagle with spread wings. Next to it are the old medieval Paços do Concelho and the house where, by local tradition, the future King John I, Master of the Order of Avis, lived with his mother. The Misericórdia chapel is also close by.

A little further on is the 13th-century castle. Three of its original six towers survive; the former keep, attached to the convent, was pulled down between 1915 and 1918. The Convent of São Bento de Avis dates from around 1223, after the town was granted to the Order in 1211. It was rebuilt and extended between the 15th and 18th centuries and closed in 1834. Its Manueline chapter room holds the municipal museum, and the former convent buildings also house the Museu do Campo Alentejano, devoted to the region's rural life.

Why does Avis matter in Portuguese history?

The Military Order of Saint Benedict of Avis gave its name to the Aviz dynasty, which ruled Portugal from 1385 to 1580. For many travellers that heritage is the reason to stop in such a small town, and the town hall sits on that route.

How to plan a visit
