About this place
Cabeção halt is a closed railway halt serving the village of Cabeção in the municipality of Mora, in Portugal's Alentejo region. It sat on the Ramal de Mora, a branch that linked Évora with Mora, and today it mainly interests rail-history enthusiasts and anyone exploring the old branch route.
What was the Cabeção halt?
The halt served Cabeção on the Mora branch, which split off from the Évora line. Counting from Mora, it was the first intermediate stop; heading toward Évora the next ones were Pavia, Vale de Paio and Arraiolos. By the line's kilometre markers it lay roughly 9 km from Mora. Wikidata lists it as a railway station in Portugal, at about 38.918° N, 8.087° W.
How did the line develop?
The branch was authorised in 1903. The first section, Évora to Arraiolos, opened on 21 April 1907. Pavia joined the network in May 1908, and trains reached Mora on 11 July 1908. The whole route ran about 60 km on Iberian gauge (1,668 mm). Services ended in May 1987. Since then the infrastructure has decayed, the rails have been lifted, and parts of the old trackbed have been fenced off or turned into a recreational path.
What else should you know about Cabeção?
Cabeção is a village in Mora municipality, in Alentejo Central. From 1395 to 1836 it served as the seat of local government for the surrounding area. The halt has no visitor facilities, so treat it as a stop on a walk or drive through the municipality rather than a destination in itself.
How do you get there?
No trains run here any more, so you need a car or other road transport. Cabeção lies in Mora municipality, and the town of Mora is the nearest larger centre to plan your route around. Parts of the former railway corridor are fenced, so stay out of closed areas.
