Cabeço das Fráguas

Guarda, Portugal

About this place

Cabeço das Fráguas is an archaeological site in the parish of Benespera, in the municipality of Guarda in eastern Portugal. On a hilltop about 1,015 metres high lie the remains of a fortified settlement and an ancient place of worship of the Lusitanians, one of the peoples who lived in the west of the Iberian Peninsula before Roman rule.

What is Cabeço das Fráguas?

It is a defended settlement with two lines of walls, standing at a spot known as Cabeço da Senhora dos Prazeres. Traces of occupation reach back to the final phase of the Late Bronze Age and continue to the end of the 1st century AD. The hill was therefore in use for many centuries, from pre-Roman times through the period of Romanisation.

At the summit there is a plateau where religious buildings were erected. This part of the site gives it its special importance: it was a sanctuary dedicated to native deities.

Why does this place matter?

The greatest scientific value lies in a rock inscription written in Latin letters but in the Lusitanian language, dating from the Roman period. It describes an offering made to local deities. Inscriptions in this language are rare, so the text from Cabeço das Fráguas gives researchers precious insight into the native tongue before Latin replaced it.

Around twenty religious altars from the Lusitanian era have also been found in the surrounding area. Together with the inscription, this makes the hill one of the most interesting sites for understanding the religion of pre-Roman Lusitania. Portuguese media count it among the mythical places of the country.

What should you know before visiting?

  • The site sits on a hill near Quinta de São Domingos, so expect a walk over uneven ground.

  • It is a protected archaeological site listed in Portugal's cultural heritage register, not a developed attraction with visitor facilities.
  • Views over the surrounding Guarda region are an extra reason to make the trip.
