About this place
Bukový vrch is a forested hill rising just above Sedlečko, a hamlet of the Šemnice municipality east of Karlovy Vary. The hill sits within the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area and is one of several summits ringing Sedlečko, alongside Šemnická skála and Travný vrch.
Where is Bukový vrch?
The hill reaches roughly 690–700 metres above sea level, southwest of Sedlečko, within the belt of forest stretching east from Karlovy Vary. Sedlečko itself is a small hamlet of fewer than 250 people, perched on a plateau above the Ohře (Eger) river valley. Old German maps recorded the hill under the name Hillberg.
The entire area belongs to the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area, one of the larger forest complexes in western Bohemia, historically known for tin and tungsten mining and for its quiet, sparsely populated hills.
What will you see at the top?
The hill's name gives away its character — the summit is covered in beautiful old-growth beech forest, with patches that feel close to primeval woodland, showing minimal human interference. This is a spot for people who value a peaceful walk among trees over sweeping views: the actual peak, marked only by a geodetic survey point, offers what local hikers describe as very modest scenery at best.
If you're after a panorama, head instead to the cluster of viewpoints scattered through the same forest belt between Karlovy Vary and Sedlečko: Goethe's Lookout, the Diana complex, Three Crosses, and the Camera Obscura pavilion all outdo Bukový vrch on views, and pairing one or two of them with the summit walk makes for an easy, well-connected day out.
How do you get to Bukový vrch?
The most straightforward approach follows a red-marked hiking trail leading east out of Karlovy Vary through the Slavkovský les woods. Many hikers loop back via the valley of the Hloubek stream. The forest also holds a good number of unofficial paths that don't always show up on maps, so it's worth sticking to the marked trail, especially since the dense woodland can be disorienting.
For walkers, it's a relaxed few-hour outing from Karlovy Vary, easy to combine with a day exploring the spa town itself. Sedlečko, at the foot of the hill, is a quiet village with little in the way of tourist infrastructure — more a waypoint on the trail than a destination in its own right.
When should you visit?
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for the walk, when the beech forest is at its most striking — fresh green in spring, golden tones in autumn. In summer, the dense canopy narrows the already limited views even further, though it does provide welcome shade on hot days. In winter, trails can turn muddy or icy, so sturdy footwear is worth packing.
