About this place
Doubská hora is a wooded hill rising just outside Karlovy Vary, also known by its German name Aberg. Standing at roughly 612 metres above sea level, it has carried a lookout structure on its summit for more than a century and a half — though today that structure holds a surprise, since the old observation tower has been turned into an exclusive hotel.
Where is it and how do you get there?
The hill sits on the south-western edge of the Karlovy Vary urban area, close to the village of Svatý Linhart, on the foothills of the Krušné hory (Ore Mountains). From the spa town's centre, a marked hiking trail gets you to the top in under an hour on foot, though many visitors prefer driving or cycling — there's a car park at the base, leaving only a short, easy climb to the summit itself. It's a popular half-day outing that pairs naturally with a stroll through the spa town below.
What's the story behind the tower?
Building on the summit dates back to the mid-19th century. The first wooden lookout tower went up in 1845 but burned down after little more than a decade in use. A stone replacement followed in 1862 and stood for several decades, until it was demolished in 1904 due to its poor structural condition. The tower seen today was designed by architect Ludwig Scheffler and completed in 1905. For most of the 20th century it functioned as a classic observation tower, offering sweeping views over the spa town and the surrounding hills.
What will you find on Doubská hora today?
Unlike most Czech lookout towers, this one has taken an unusual turn: the building has been converted into a luxury hotel operating under the name Aberg, and it's no longer open to casual visitors as a public viewpoint. Even so, the hill itself remains a worthwhile destination — it's covered in forest, crisscrossed by hiking and cycling trails, and the approach offers views over the Ohře river valley and the town of Karlovy Vary spread out in the basin below. Spa guests often come here for a dose of fresh air and light exercise between treatments.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring and summer are the best seasons, when the deciduous forest covering the slopes is in full leaf and the views along the approach are at their widest. Autumn brings vivid colours, though daylight hours shorten. In winter the trail can turn icy, so proper footwear is worth packing — but the walk remains possible year-round and needs no special preparation.
