Břenčák

Brno, Czechia

About this place

Břenčák is a nature reserve on the western edge of Brno, within the cadastral territory of Kníničky, spread across a steep, forested slope above the left bank of the Brno Reservoir (Brněnská přehrada). Covering 28 hectares, the area has been under protection since 1985 because of its striking rock outcrops and vegetation typical of dry, heat-loving habitats.

What makes the Břenčák slope distinctive?

The hillside drops steeply toward the reservoir, and its defining feature is a series of rock outcrops rising above the tree line, some reaching as high as 15 metres. A marked hiking trail winds between the rocks, letting visitors get close to the formations while walking through the wooded slope.

What kind of vegetation grows here?

The reserve preserves near-natural forest communities dominated by shrubby oaks, growing alongside frequent stands of cornelian cherry dogwood. The combination of rocky ground and a south-facing exposure supports a rich array of heat-loving plant species. Among those recorded are figwort varieties typical of warmer parts of Central Europe, rough comfrey, spring primrose and spring speedwell — species associated with dry, sun-exposed slopes rather than the shaded forest floor typical of the wider region.

Which animals live in the reserve?

Břenčák's fauna reflects its mix of forest and rocky habitats. The smooth snake, a species that favours sun-warmed, rocky terrain, has been recorded in the reserve, alongside the middle spotted woodpecker and the nuthatch, both associated with mature deciduous stands.

Where exactly is Břenčák and how do you get there?

The reserve lies between the villages of Veverská Bítýška and Jinačovice, within the nature park surrounding the Brno Reservoir, right at the edge of the city of Brno. Its approximate coordinates are 49.2739°N, 16.4586°E. The proximity to the reservoir and the dense network of marked trails make the surrounding area especially popular with cyclists, with routes running along and around the reserve among the most frequented in the Brno region.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a hiking trail through the reserve? Yes, a marked footpath runs between the rock outcrops, allowing visitors to see the formations up close without leaving the designated route.

Since when has Břenčák been protected? The area has been a protected nature reserve since 1985 and covers 28 hectares.

Is the reserve suitable for a cycling trip? The reserve itself, as a protected area, is primarily meant for walkers, but the surrounding trail network around the Brno Reservoir is very popular with cyclists, so a visit to Břenčák can easily be combined with a longer ride.

What is the main natural attraction of this site? The combination of tall rock outcrops and heat-loving flora rarely found elsewhere in this part of Moravia is what makes the site ecologically valuable and led to its protection.
