About this place
Junácká louka is a small but botanically significant nature reserve on the outskirts of Brno, tucked within the forests of the Podkomorské lesy natural park. Covering just over five hectares, the meadow occupies a gentle south to southwest-facing slope above the left bank of the Brno Reservoir, within the cadastral territory of Kníničky, in a locality known as Skautská louka. Geographically the site belongs to the Hornosvratecká highlands, and it counts among those quiet corners around Brno that are easy to miss from the main road along the reservoir but well worth the short detour.
Why is this place protected?
The meadow was declared a protected area in 1989, with its territory precisely measured at 5.034 hectares. The reason for protection lies in its rich and varied flora, most notably the frequent presence of gentians, a plant group considered highly endangered in the Czech Republic. Among the most valuable species growing here are the fringed gentian, Walliska fescue, and slender feather grass. Their presence makes Junácká louka one of the more important refuges for rare meadow vegetation in the wider South Moravia region, despite its modest size.
What can you see from here?
The defining feature of Junácká louka is its exposure: the gently sloping ground faces south to southwest, directly toward the Brno Reservoir (Brněnská přehrada), one of the most popular recreational spots for Brno residents. On the opposite bank, facing the meadow, stands Veveří Castle, one of the oldest and most picturesque fortified structures in Moravia. Nearby, on the same side as the castle, lies the Krnovec nature reserve. Together these elements give visitors to Junácká louka a view that combines the natural meadow landscape with the reservoir and the silhouette of the castle in the background.
How to get there?
The meadow is relatively accessible to hikers exploring the area around Brno and the Brno Reservoir. One convenient approach is via the footbridge located below Veveří Castle, from which a path leads toward the opposite shore of the reservoir. This route is often chosen by visitors who want to combine a castle visit with a walk along the water and a stop at the meadow.
Frequently asked questions
Can you walk through the reserve? As with most nature monuments in the Czech Republic, the area is open to foot traffic, but being a protected site it calls for staying on marked paths and refraining from picking any plants.
What else is worth seeing nearby? Right next door is Veveří Castle, reachable via the footbridge, and the Krnovec nature reserve on the opposite side of the reservoir. The Brno Reservoir itself also offers pleasant walking paths along its shoreline.
When is the best time to visit Junácká louka? Given the character of the protected flora, including the flowering gentians, late summer and early autumn tend to be the most rewarding time to visit, when these plants are in full bloom.
Is this a good spot for a family outing? Yes. The gentle terrain combined with the proximity of popular attractions like Veveří Castle and the reservoir makes the area well suited to a relaxed family walk paired with some sightseeing.
