About this place
Bílé stráně is a small but ecologically remarkable nature reserve just north of Pokratice, a district of Litoměřice, within the České středohoří (Czech Central Uplands). A limestone-marl slope rises above the left bank of the Pokratický stream at an elevation of 277 to 330 metres, forming a pale, chalky strip clearly visible from a distance — which gave the site its name, meaning "white slopes."
Why is this place protected?
Bílé stráně is considered one of the oldest protected areas in northwestern Bohemia. Part of the site was already under private protection back in 1929, and it received official status as a national natural monument on 30 March 1954. Despite covering less than a single hectare (0.9924 ha), its ecological value is disproportionately high for its size.
What can visitors see here?
The slope is built from Cretaceous marly limestone, creating exceptionally favourable conditions for xerothermic vegetation — plants adapted to hot, dry conditions. Rare and endangered heat-loving species grow here, including several orchids, most notably the protected lady's slipper orchid. Visitors may also come across rare rowan species endemic to the area, such as Czech rowan, Elbe rowan, Danube rowan, and service rowan. This richness of flora is why the site was included in the European Natura 2000 network as an area of Community importance, designated to protect warm, dry grassland habitats.
The fauna associated with this habitat type is similarly notable — heat-tolerant and drought-resistant invertebrate species find here one of the few sites in the region with a suitable microclimate.
Where exactly is Bílé stráně located?
The reserve lies within the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area, on the territory of the town of Litoměřice, right next to the Pokratice district. This makes it easily accessible for anyone visiting Litoměřice itself, a town known for its historic old town and views over the Elbe river valley.
Can you walk through it?
Given its status as a national natural monument and the fragility of the xerothermic habitat, the site calls for careful visiting — ideally sticking to marked paths and avoiding stepping into the grassland itself, so as not to damage the delicate vegetation, including the protected orchids.
