About this place
Bateria Alta ao norte da Praia da Água Doce is a historic coastal battery in the municipality of Cascais, in Portugal's Lisbon District. It stands on high ground above the Atlantic, between Guincho beach to the north and Crismina beach to the south. Today it houses the Hotel do Guincho, so the old fortification now serves as accommodation with an ocean outlook.
Where is the battery?
The site lies in the parish of Cascais e Estoril, on the Atlantic coast west of the town of Cascais. Its coordinates are roughly 38.728° N, 9.476° W. The elevated position was deliberate: from here, gunners could watch the sea approaches and the beaches nearby.
Why was it built?
The battery dates from the 18th century, during the reign of King José I. It was built because of the war with Spain and formed part of the fortification works at the mouth of the Tagus, meant to protect the ocean approach to Lisbon. It was built together with the Crismina and Galé batteries, and these positions could support one another with fire.
Its main purpose was to quarter small garrisons. Their presence was meant to make it harder for enemy forces to land on the nearby beaches, rather than to act as a large fortress.
What did the original structure look like?
The original battery had an angular parapet with three faces, pierced by seven gun ports. Behind it was a platform for guns laid on the flat. This was a typical layout for a small coastal battery, where reach along the shoreline mattered most.
In the 19th century the site was enlarged. A gorge wall was added at the rear, closing the fortified enclosure and giving the battery a polygonal plan. It became a fully enclosed defensive work.
Heritage protection
In 1977 the battery was classified as an Immovable Cultural Heritage of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público). The listing recognises its place in the historic line of fortifications around Cascais.
Practical tips for visitors
- A hotel operates inside, so access to the interiors depends on the property's rules. Check in advance.
- The easiest plan is to combine a visit with a trip to Guincho beach, just to the north.
- The site fits well into a route following the coastal fortifications of Cascais, alongside the Crismina and Galé batteries.
- The area is open to Atlantic wind, so bring an extra layer even in summer.
