Bat

Bat is the highest peak of the Kozjak (Veliki Kozjak) massif, rising above the village of Kijevo in the Dalmatian hinterland (Zagora), in a triangle formed by the towns of Vrlika, Knin and Drniš. It reaches 1,206 metres above sea level and belongs to the Dinaric Alps. Locals and hikers usually call it "Kijevski Bat," a name that simply points out the obvious — the peak towers directly over Kijevo and is visible from almost anywhere in the village.

What does the peak look like?

Bat has a distinctive pyramidal shape built from dolomite rock. Seen from Kijevo, its raw, jagged silhouette is often compared to the peaks of Velebit, though on a smaller scale. To the north and east it drops away in a steep rock face roughly 150 metres high, which makes it an unmistakable landmark across the wider Zagora region. About thirty metres north of the summit stands a large white metal cross, facing the village and visible from a considerable distance — it's the feature that shows up in almost every photo taken from this route.

What will you find at the top?

The summit carries the standard set of gear found on Croatian mountain peaks: a sign with the peak's name, a metal box containing a visitors' log, and a mountaineering stamp set into the rock. The real reward, though, is the view, which opens up in every direction. The most striking sightline runs toward the Dinara massif and its peaks Sinjal and Badanj; on a clear day you can also make out Lake Peruća and the Svilaja range to the southeast.

How do you get to Bat?

The most popular approach starts in Kijevo and is known locally as the "Kijevo–Križni put–Kijevski Bat" route (the Way of the Cross to Kijevski Bat). It's a forest trail rated as demanding, with a solid elevation gain, and the round trip typically takes around 4.5 to 5 hours. Along the way the terrain shifts through varied vegetation, with mountain wildflowers and birdlife making it worthwhile even for visitors more interested in nature than in reaching the summit itself.

When should you visit?

Given the rocky, exposed terrain and the length of the climb, spring and autumn are the best windows — temperatures are moderate and visibility tends to be at its best. In summer, the steep, largely unshaded sections can be draining, while in winter the rocky stretches near the top can ice over. Whatever the season, it's worth setting off early in the morning to be back down well before dark.
