The site has roots going back to the Islamic era of Madina Mayurqa, when it is believed to have held the largest mosque in the city. According to tradition, the first Christian mass in Palma was celebrated inside that very building on the day the troops of King Jaume I entered the city in 1229. The former mosque continued to serve as a church for more than a century and a half before construction of a new Gothic temple began around 1390. The church takes its name from Saint Michael the Archangel, and its consecration is linked to Friar Miquel Fabra, a Dominican and confessor to Jaume I himself.

Little of the original Gothic structure has survived to today — a fire in the 16th century destroyed most of the building. Only the façade and the first chapel on the right as you enter date back to that period. The façade itself, attributed to Pere de Sant Joan, master builder of Palma's La Seu cathedral, is considered one of the finest examples of Mallorcan Gothic art, and it's worth pausing outside to take in its details before stepping in. The interior was rebuilt in the 17th century in Baroque style, creating a striking contrast with the medieval façade. In 2018, by a decree signed by Pope Francis on March 19 and formally announced on October 7 of that year, the church was elevated to the rank of minor basilica — one of the highest honors a Catholic church can receive.
