Barutana Memorial Area

Grad Bjelovar, Croatia

About this place

Barutana Memorial Area is a place of remembrance in the Bedenik forest, northwest of Bjelovar in Croatia. It honours the city's defenders who died here in an explosion on 29 September 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence. Today it is a large complex with a monument, a chapel, an education centre and an interpretive trail.

What happened at Barutana?

"Barutana" is the Croatian word for a gunpowder store. In 1991 the forest held a war-reserve warehouse of the 265th Motorised Brigade of the Yugoslav People's Army. On 29 September Croatian soldiers made a final attempt to seize it. During the operation a huge explosion occurred. The blast left a crater roughly 12 metres deep and levelled the forest within about 60 metres. Defenders of Bjelovar were killed, and the site became one of the city's most important symbols of wartime memory.

What does the site look like today?

The area was thoroughly renovated and reopened in 2020. The design is by architect Ivana Salopek, chosen through a public architectural competition. The designers did not erase the traces of the event: remains of the destroyed warehouses, broken trees and military barricades were built into the new layout. A walk through the forest therefore works as a lesson in history rather than a stop at a single plaque.

On site you will find:

  • a monument to fallen veterans and defenders,
  • a chapel,
  • an information and education centre,
  • an educational trail with 14 information boards,
  • a T-55 tank and a BVP M-80 infantry fighting vehicle displayed outdoors.

The project has been linked with the New European Bauhaus prizes, which shows the complex is appreciated for its architecture and landscape as well as its commemorative role.

Who is it for?

The memorial suits visitors interested in recent Croatian history, the 1990s war and the ways societies commemorate difficult events. The trail leads step by step through the events of 1991, so no prior knowledge is needed. It works well for families with older children and school groups, since the boards explain the context and the military exhibits help convey the scale of the conflict. As this is a memorial, quiet and respectful behaviour is expected.

Barutana and the museum in town

The outdoor complex is part of the Information and Education Centre of the Homeland War. It is linked with the Museum of the Homeland War in central Bjelovar, on Stjepan Radić Square. Visiting both makes sense: the museum gives the broader historical context, while Barutana shows the exact place where one of the area's most tragic episodes unfolded.

Annual commemoration

Every year, on the anniversary of the explosion, the city holds a ceremony for the fallen. If you want to see the site at its most symbolic moment, plan a visit for the end of September.
