Barrancos de Gebas

Alhama de Murcia, Spain

About this place

Barrancos de Gebas is one of the most striking landscapes in the Region of Murcia, Spain — a vast badlands area of more than 2,200 hectares spread across the municipalities of Alhama de Murcia and Librilla. The site was granted protected status in April 1995 as a Paisaje Protegido (protected landscape), at the same time the boundaries of the neighboring Sierra Espuña Regional Park were expanded.

How did this moon-like landscape form?

The distinctive appearance of Barrancos de Gebas is the result of millions of years of erosion. Waters from the Rambla de Algeciras and its basin, flowing over highly erodible clay and marl terrain, carved out a dense network of gullies, canyons and ravines. The result is a surface cut through with deep grooves, sharp ridges and steep slopes that resembles the surface of the moon — earning the area its nickname as Murcia's own "lunar landscape."

What can visitors see on site?

The main appeal of Barrancos de Gebas lies in its geomorphological structure — irregular rock formations, narrow canyons and scree slopes create a view unlike anything else in the region. A marked viewpoint with interpretive panels lets visitors take in nearly the entire protected area at a glance. A vehicle-accessible road leads to the viewpoint, and a parking area on site makes the location easy to reach even for those not planning a longer hike.

Can Barrancos de Gebas be explored on foot?

Part of the area is open to hikers and cyclists via marked trails that run along the edges of the ravines and lead to the viewpoint. Because of the site's protected status and the fragility of its eroded formations, straying from the marked paths is discouraged — the bare slopes of the badlands are vulnerable to accelerated erosion caused by foot traffic.

Why visit Barrancos de Gebas?

Barrancos de Gebas appeals to travelers looking for raw, untamed scenery that stands apart from Murcia's typical mountain and coastal landscapes. It is also a valuable geological site — millions of years of erosion laid bare and legible to the naked eye, no specialist knowledge required. Its proximity to Sierra Espuña Regional Park makes it easy to combine a visit with other natural attractions in the region as part of a single day trip.
