Anenské údolí

Harrachov, Czechia

About this place

Anenské údolí is a small but remarkably charming nature reserve tucked almost into the center of Harrachov, right next to the lower station of the cable car up to Čertova hora. It covers a flat stretch of the Mumlava stream valley, bordered on one side by the riverbed and on the other by a local road — the whole protected area spans only about 1.1 hectares, sitting at roughly 640–665 meters above sea level.

Why is this valley protected?

The reason behind the protection is a meadow that bursts into bloom every year, right after the snow melts, with an enormous number of white crocuses (Crocus albiflorus). The sight of thousands of delicate white flowers covering the entire meadow is one of the most recognizable early-spring scenes in the whole Krkonoše (Giant Mountains) region. Interestingly, this crocus is not native to the Krkonoše landscape — it originally comes from the Alps, where it grows abundantly, and it most likely spread into Anenské údolí from nearby garden plots before naturalizing on the wild meadow. Today, though, it forms a lasting and carefully maintained part of the local natural scenery.

The area is managed by the Krkonoše National Park Administration (Správa Krkonošského národního parku), which carries out regular conservation work here, including scheduled mowing of the meadow and efforts to restore small ponds within the valley, supporting the biodiversity of this modest yet valuable ecosystem.

What is a walk through the valley like?

A blue-marked hiking trail runs through Anenské údolí, and it ranks among the easiest routes in the entire area — even the youngest visitors can manage it comfortably, whether on foot, on a scooter, or on a small bike. This makes the valley a popular choice for families with children looking for a short, relaxed walk surrounded by nature, without the steep climbs typical of many other Krkonoše trails.

Unlike the busiest routes in the Giant Mountains, Anenské údolí remains a relatively quiet spot — even during peak tourist season, it's possible to find a moment of calm here, away from the crowds. Its proximity to the center of Harrachov and to the lower cable car station means the valley is easy to combine with other local attractions, such as a ride up to Čertova hora or a visit to a nearby glassworks.
