Želin glas

Želin Glas is a hill in Croatia's Dubrovnik-Neretva County, rising above the hamlet of Gornji Majkovi on the old road that once linked Slano and Trsteno, not far from Dubrovnik.

Where exactly is Želin Glas?

The hill faces Grdanji vrh across a shallow valley that shelters the settlement of Majkovi. Enclosed by high ground on three sides, the hamlet opens only toward the sea, where the land gives way to sweeping views of the coast. At the foot of Želin Glas lies a clearing crossed by a stretch of the historic road built by the French administration in the early 19th century and still known locally as Napoleon's Road, or Marmont's Road. Past the clearing, the ground drops sharply toward the Adriatic, its steep cliffs covered in dense coniferous forest that reaches almost to the waterline.

What can you see from the area?

A short walk from Želin Glas, on the same stretch of road, sits Gajina, a well-known lookout point. On clear days the view stretches south to the Pelješac peninsula and Mljet, much of which is protected as a national park, continues past the Elafiti Islands, and on exceptionally clear days reaches toward the Italian coast near Otranto. The mix of pale limestone, sea blue, and forest green is why many travelers rank Gajina among the finest viewpoints on the entire Adriatic.

Walking or cycling is the best way to reach Želin Glas and the neighboring viewpoint, and it's one of the reasons the Majkovi area has become a favorite among cyclists touring this stretch of Croatia. A rest area and a self-service bike station near Gajina make the stop practical even for casual riders. The area sits along the road between Slano and Trsteno, so either village makes a convenient starting point, with Dubrovnik itself only a short drive further along the coast.

When is the best time to visit?

Because the climb is steep and much of the route offers little shade, spring and autumn bring the most comfortable conditions. In summer, an early start avoids the midday heat and also catches the best light for photographs, when the morning sun brings out the colors of the coastline and islands below.
