Zásadka Castle

Zásadka Castle is a scenic ruin of a former fortified manor, later rebuilt as a Renaissance chateau, perched on a rocky promontory above the confluence of the Mohelka and Jizera rivers, near the village of Sychrov and a few kilometers from Mnichovo Hradiště in the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) region.

What is the history behind it?

The first written mention of a fortified dwelling here dates back to 1406, when the estate was purchased by Matěj Pomazánka of Zliv. During the 15th century it belonged to the Čuch family of Navarov and Zásadka, who eventually fell into debt and sold the property to Jiří of Poděbrady in 1452. Over the following centuries ownership changed hands repeatedly — among the noble families and individuals associated with the estate were Markvart Fryček of Daliměřice, the lords of Řehnice, Hedvika of Házmburk, Kateřina Žerotínská of Smiřice, as well as Albrecht of Wallenstein and Václav Budovec of Budov, both prominent figures of Bohemian history around the turn of the 17th century.

A turning point came in 1560, when the estate was bought by Zikmund Vančura of Řehnice. He converted the original Gothic fortified dwelling into a two-winged, two-story Renaissance chateau. Over time, however, the residence lost its significance as a noble seat, and eventually only a gamekeeper overseeing the surrounding forests lived there. Its final decline came with a fire in the 19th century, after which the building was abandoned and never rebuilt.

Today Zásadka is an extensive, romantically atmospheric ruin, freely open to visitors year-round. In the basement, two partially buried rooms with barrel vaulting have survived — the clearest remaining trace of the original layout. On the outer walls, fragments of stone window frames and arched cornices are still visible, hinting at the building's former Renaissance decoration. Based on older descriptions, historians believe the facades were once adorned with sgraffito decoration typical of residences from that era — no longer visible to the naked eye today, but recorded in historical sources.
