Svijany Castle

Svijany Chateau is a Renaissance-era residence in the small village of Svijany, in the Liberec Region of northern Czechia. The place is best known for the brewery standing right beside it, but the chateau itself has, after decades of closure, reopened to visitors and become a genuine draw for anyone touring the region.

How did the chateau come about?

Svijany already existed as a settlement in the 14th century, belonging to the Cistercian monastery in Mnichovo Hradiště. In the mid-16th century the village passed to Jaroslav of Vartenberg, who built a Renaissance fortress here — the structure that would eventually grow into today's chateau. After his death, the estate went to Jáchym Ondřej Šlik, one of the Bohemian noblemen executed in 1621 on Prague's Old Town Square following the defeat of the Estates Uprising.

Who turned the fortress into a chateau?

The estate then passed to the Wallenstein family, who held it for nearly two centuries, until 1814. It was under their ownership that the old fortress was rebuilt and expanded into a proper chateau, and the neighboring brewery was modernized alongside it. In 1820 the Svijany estate, brewery included, was bought by Duke Karel Alain Gabriel Rohan, who attached it to his holdings at nearby Sychrov. The Rohan family ran the brewery until 1912, when it was purchased by its longtime tenant and master brewer, Antonín Kratochvíle — his family kept running the operation until 1939.

What happened to the chateau after the war?

After 1945 the estate was confiscated and later nationalized, passing to the state-run North Bohemian breweries. For decades the chateau itself faded from public attention. That changed in 1996, when it was bought by Milan Rýdlo and turned into the seat of the Knightly Order of St. Wenceslas. In 2013 the property was acquired by the Svijany brewery company, which carried out a full renovation with the help of EU funding. The restored chateau reopened to the public in 2017.
