Dobczyce Castle

Dobczyce, Poland

About this place

Dobczyce Castle is a historic castle in Dobczyce, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship of southern Poland. It stands on a rocky hill above Lake Dobczyce, and its history goes back to fortification works from 1311, with the first written mention appearing in 1362. Today it offers a short sightseeing stop with a strong sense of the site’s long medieval past.

Na miejscu można liczyć przede wszystkim na:

  • traces of a fortified stronghold from the time of Casimir III the Great, when the walls were reported to be 5 to 9 meters thick
  • the castle’s later Renaissance transformation carried out by the Lubomirski family, who took over in 1585 and rebuilt the Gothic fortress in 1593–1594
  • details connected with the residence’s former layout, including the clocktower, chapel, fountain, and the fact that by 1620 the castle had 70 rooms and 3 towers

For a visit, it is worth choosing a calm day and wearing comfortable shoes, since the castle sits on elevated ground above the lake. It is a good option for travelers interested in history, castle architecture, and a compact sightseeing break with views over Dobczyce Lake.
