Zámeček Fortress

Zámeček Fortress is a small Baroque manor house standing in the eastern part of the village of Velký Ořechov, in the Zlín District of Moravia, roughly 14 km south of the city of Zlín. Despite the "fortress" in its English name, the building visitors see today is a modest two-storey residence that evolved over centuries from a medieval fortified manor into an administrative seat, and now forms part of the local elementary school.

How old is the site?

A fortified manor is believed to have stood here as early as the mid-14th century, although the first written record of it dates only to 1500. Owners of the surrounding estate are documented even earlier: a nobleman named Beneš of Ořechov lived in the village in 1355, and Ninek of Ořechov is recorded there in 1368. From 1407 the property belonged to the Ořechov family of Honbice. Ownership changed again in 1493, when Hynek of Zástřizly acquired it, and in 1500, when Jan Onšek of Bělkovice purchased both the manor and the village.

Who turned the manor into a "zámeček"?

The building's biggest transformation came after 1652, when the estate passed to the Kounic family, one of the most influential noble houses in Moravia, who also held the nearby town of Uherský Brod. It was Lev Vilém of Kounic who had the old fortified manor rebuilt around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries into a small Baroque residence, one intended for administrative rather than ceremonial use. The Kounic family kept Velký Ořechov until the end of the 19th century, and throughout this period the zámeček mainly functioned as a management building for the estate rather than a stately home.

What is there to see today?

The current structure is a plain, two-storey Baroque building without towers or defensive walls — nothing that visually recalls a medieval stronghold. For a long time it has been used as part of the village's elementary school, so the interior is not open to visitors and the building itself is not set up for public tours. From the outside, though, you can still see its modest but recognisable Baroque facade, one of the few physical traces of Velký Ořechov's long history.
