Zaječí vrch

Potůčky, Czechia

About this place

Zaječí vrch (also historically known as Zaječí hora) is a 1,009-metre peak in the Krušné hory (Ore Mountains), located within the municipality of Potůčky in the far west of the Czech Republic, close to the German border. It holds a distinctive record: it is the westernmost peak exceeding 1,000 metres in the entire Ore Mountains range — and in the whole of the Czech Republic.

Where is it located?

The summit sits roughly 3 km north of the village of Nové Hamry and 3 km east of Horní Blatná. A deep 111-metre saddle separates it from the neighbouring Blatenský vrch, which makes Zaječí vrch the second most topographically prominent summit in the whole Krušné hory range, even though its elevation places it among the lower thousand-metre peaks of the area.

How to get there?

The easiest approach starts on the road connecting Nové Hamry and Horní Blatná. At its highest point, next to a tourist shelter, turn onto the paved Bučinská road, which also serves as a marked cycling route. From there, an unmarked forest path leads to the summit after about 250 metres. The walk is short and technically undemanding, making it suitable for casual hikers and cyclists looking for a quick side trip.

What will you see at the top?

The summit is covered by spruce forest with several clearings, though many of them are gradually becoming overgrown, limiting the views right at the geodetic point itself. A better vantage point is the lookout platform located about 300 metres north-northwest of the summit, which opens up wider views across the surrounding Ore Mountains ridgeline and the Czech-German borderland.

Where does the name come from?

The older name, Zaječí hora ("Hare Mountain"), appears on a Czech state map from 1985 and in the 2006 Geographical Dictionary of the Czech Republic: Mountains and Lowlands. The now-standard form, Zaječí vrch, became established later and is the name used on most current hiking maps and guides.

When is the best time to visit?

Because the summit is wooded and the main viewpoint is exposed to the elements, late spring through summer offers the driest paths and longest daylight. Autumn brings the colours typical of the Ore Mountains, while winter can mean snow-covered trails — though the approach itself is short enough to manage with proper footwear.

Frequently asked questions

How high is Zaječí vrch? The peak reaches 1,009 metres above sea level and is the westernmost thousand-metre summit in the entire Czech Republic.

Is there a view from the summit? Directly at the top, forest limits the view, but a lookout platform about 300 metres north-northwest of the geodetic point offers a wider panorama.

How long does the hike to the top take? From the Nové Hamry–Horní Blatná road, after turning onto the Bučinská road and then the forest path, the final stretch is only about 250 metres — a few minutes on foot.

Is Zaječí vrch suitable for families? Yes. The approach is short and not technically difficult, though the final forest path is unmarked, so a map or GPS app is recommended.
