Xardín do Posío

Xardín do Posío is an urban park in Ourense that began life as a botanical garden in the mid-19th century. Today it's a favorite spot for locals to stroll through and a welcome rest stop for visitors exploring the city center.

Where did this garden come from?

The park was founded around 1846 by teachers from the neighboring secondary school, now known as Instituto Ramón Otero Pedrayo, which still occupies the same historic building. The garden was created as a teaching tool for the school's chair of physics, chemistry, and natural history — trees and plants were brought directly from the Botanical Garden in Madrid, and the collection eventually grew to around 200 species. For decades, Posío functioned as a genuine botanical garden woven into the city's monumental quarter, before later renovations gave it a more functional, everyday park character.

The park unfolds across three levels, best explored one after another. The upper terrace holds a children's playground, making it a natural stop for families traveling with young kids. The middle level is a paved promenade lined with modern-style streetlights and home to a café — a good spot to pause for coffee in the shade of the trees. The lowest level concentrates most of the greenery: a central walkway formed by a double row of Canary Island palm trees, nine on each side, transplanted here in 1999. This stretch is the closest thing left to the garden's original botanical identity.
