Vychovatelna is a small Neo-Baroque chateau in Prague's Libeň district (Prague 8), standing right next to the multi-level road junction that borrowed its name. It's easy to drive past without realizing there's an unusual social history behind the facade.

What is this building, and why the odd name?

The house was built in 1906–1907 to a design by architect Jan Kříženecký — better known today as a pioneer of Czech cinema, here working instead as the designer of a public institutional building. It was purpose-built to house a care and education facility for young people aged 8 to 18, described at the time as "morally at risk." The institution had previously operated under the name Pražský vychovatelský ústav v Libni (the Prague Educational Institute in Libeň) out of the nearby Libeň Chateau — hence the name Vychovatelna, from the Czech word for an educator or carer.

The idea for the institution is credited to Vojtěch Náprstek, the well-known Prague traveler, collector and patron whose name also lives on in Prague's Náprstek Museum. When it opened in this building, it was the first facility of its kind in Bohemia, with capacity for 55 wards.
