Rokoska

Rokoska is a former estate crowned by a Rococo mansion on a high hill above the Vltava valley in Prague's Libeň district (Prague 8) — today known mainly as a landmark near Bulovka Hospital and a favourite local viewpoint.

What is Rokoska

Rokoska stands on Zenklova Street, right next to the helipad of Bulovka Hospital. The name refers to the Rococo rebuilding the old estate underwent, and its position on the ridge of a high hill is exactly what gives this corner of Libeň its wide views over the Vltava valley. The building itself is not open to visitors, so Rokoska works more as a landmark and a spot for a walk than as an attraction you can step inside.

A brief history

The land where Rokoska stands was already planted with vineyards back in the 16th century. A Baroque vineyard estate was built here in the 17th century, though little of that original structure survives. What stands today dates from the last quarter of the 18th century, when the estate was rebuilt into a Rococo mansion. The rebuilding is usually credited to Prokop Gindely, the estate's owner at the time, although some sources attribute the design instead to a Prague burgher named J. Štembera.

Through the 19th century the building kept changing hands and purpose. After 1836 it was bought by a certain J. Lendecke, who turned it into a sugar refinery. From 1890 it served as a poorhouse, and in 1903 the city of Prague purchased it and set up a municipal reformatory on the site. After the Second World War the building became part of the neighbouring Bulovka Hospital complex, an association that still defines Rokoska today. In 1958 it was listed as a Czech cultural monument.

The building itself

Rokoska is a multi-storey building on a rectangular plan, topped with a mansard roof and a small tower. A triangular gable rises above the main façade, while the sides are decorated with richly shaped Rococo attics — the clearest trace of that 18th-century transformation. Because the building remains part of the hospital grounds and is closed to the public, it is best appreciated from the outside, on a walk through the surrounding streets.

Around Rokoska you'll find a community garden, a small sports park and a playground — the kind of everyday amenities typical of this residential pocket of Libeň. The real draw of the area, though, is the popular Květinářská viewpoint, which looks out over the Vltava valley and the Libeň district below. From here it's also a short walk to Libeňský most, a functionalist — at times almost Cubist — bridge that has linked Holešovice and Libeň across the river since 1928. In recent years a new residential development named after the old estate, Vila Rokoska, has also been built nearby on Nad Rokoskou Street.
