Vřesovice

Vřesovice Chateau is a Baroque residence in the Moravian village of Vřesovice, about 6 km south of Prostějov in the Olomouc Region. Built at the start of the 18th century as the summer seat of the abbot of Hradisko Monastery, it still stands at the heart of the village today - now home to the municipal office, a kindergarten and a small memorial room.

Who built the chateau, and why?

The village of Vřesovice belonged to the Premonstratensian canons of Hradisko Monastery near Olomouc without interruption from 1151 to 1784, making it one of the order's longest-held Moravian estates. The chateau went up between 1702 and 1704 on the initiative of Abbot Norbert Želecký of Počenice, conceived as a summer retreat away from monastery life. Its architect remains disputed: historians point to either Domenico Martinelli or Giovanni Pietro Tencalla, two Italians active in Moravia at the time, but neither attribution has been confirmed. The interior stucco work, however, is firmly credited to the workshop of Baltazar Fontana, one of the era's most sought-after stuccoists - fragments of his decoration survive today. A chapel was added in 1708 and enlarged in 1712, and the chateau served as the administrative centre for the entire local monastic estate.

What happened after the monastery was dissolved?

Everything changed in 1784, when Joseph II's reforms dissolved Hradisko Monastery and the estate passed into state administration. In 1825 it was bought by Austrian State Chancellor Prince Klemens Wenzel von Metternich, one of the most powerful figures in Europe. Under his ownership one side of the courtyard arcade was removed to enlarge the dining hall. In 1848, during the Springtime of Peoples, the chateau even hosted a parliamentary election, in which local farmer Jiří Frýbort was returned as deputy - a small-village episode tied to the great political upheavals of the Habsburg monarchy. In 1851 the estate was leased to Count Pálffy, who set up a military school on the premises.

Why did the chateau lose its former glamour?

Fire tore through the building in 1885, and the rebuilt structure was reduced to practical use as a granary and stable, stripped of its earlier grandeur. New owners followed - Captain Bruno Vojáček, then Vřesovice mayor Jan Svozil, and from 1927 Vincenc Jančík - who used the building for everyday purposes, including a carpentry workshop. Only after nationalisation in 1945 did systematic repairs begin: in the 1960s the remaining courtyard arcades were bricked up, and the building became home to the local national committee, a library and a kindergarten. The old chapel was converted into a memorial room, still holding a fragment of a stone penitential cross dated 1599 - a trace of the site's much older, pre-Baroque history.

What does Vřesovice Chateau look like today?

After 1989 the chateau was restored to the Jančík family heirs, and in 1994 the municipality bought it for its own use. Today it is a multipurpose building housing the town hall, a doctor's surgery, a post office, a kindergarten, rehearsal space for the local brass band and community rooms, while the memorial room still recalls more than three centuries of local history. It is worth combining a visit with a walk through the village itself: eleven monuments here appear on the national heritage register, including the Gothic Church of St Peter and Paul with records dating back to 1453, a free-standing mid-18th-century bell tower, and a Baroque chapel of St John of Nepomuk.
