Vráteň

Vráteň (Vrátenská hora) is a volcanic hill in the municipality of Nosálov, in Central Bohemia, on the northeastern edge of the Kokořínsko protected landscape area. Rising to 508 metres above sea level, its summit carries one of the widest viewpoints in this part of the Czech Republic, and the lookout tower on top has become a landmark of the Mělník-Kokořínsko region.

Where is Vráteň and how do you get there?

The hill lies in the Polomené hory (Broken Hills) upland, right next to the village of Nosálov, which spreads along its eastern and southeastern slope at an elevation of about 382 metres. The nearest larger town is Mšeno, a few kilometres to the south, while Mělník itself is roughly 17-20 km away. The wider Kokořínsko area is known for its sandstone rock formations, narrow gorges and quiet villages, and Vráteň effectively marks its northeastern gateway.

By car, the easiest approach is along road II/273 to Nosálov, where it makes sense to park. From the village, a blue-marked hiking trail leads to the summit — about 1.8 km on foot, an easy walk suitable for families. Nosálov itself is worth a stop on the way: it preserves a rare example of a Gothic village layout built around so-called "Franconian farmsteads," with cottages dating from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, which is why the village has been protected as a folk-architecture reserve.

The top of Vráteň carries a combined telecommunications and observation tower, 42 metres tall, with a viewing platform set at a height of 25 metres. Reaching it means climbing 127 steps of a spiral staircase. The idea of building the tower dates back to the early 1990s, and the structure itself was opened to the public on 28 October 1999.

The platform offers a panorama that extends well beyond the immediate region — on a clear day, visitors can make out the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains), the Jizera Mountains, the České středohoří highlands, and the Ralsko upland together with the area around Česká Lípa. Spring and summer are the best seasons to climb Vráteň, since longer days and generally clearer skies make the most of the view from the platform — fog and low cloud can seriously limit visibility at other times of year. Autumn appeals to visitors who prefer a quieter trail with fewer people around, and the changing colours on the wooded slopes add to the walk.
