About this place
Kokořínský důl is one of the most distinctive valleys in Central Bohemia, located within the municipality of Mšeno, at the heart of the Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area near the town of Mělník. The nature reserve covering the valley was established in 1953 and today spans more than 2,000 hectares. The valley itself stretches for roughly 14 kilometres, running from a trail crossing known as Ráj to the Lhotka railway station near Mělník.
What shapes the valley's landscape?
The landscape of Kokořínský důl is built almost entirely from sandstone. Over thousands of years, water, wind and frost have carved the soft rock into an astonishing variety of forms — blocks, towers, deep gorges, rock caves and overhangs. In several stretches, the sandstone walls form what feels like an actual "rock city," crossed by narrow, shaded paths. Rising above the whole area is the silhouette of Kokořín Castle, one of the region's best-known landmarks, visible from many viewpoints inside the reserve.
Where do the famous "pokličky" come from?
One of the area's most striking geological features are the so-called pokličky — mushroom-shaped rock formations found where the Kokořínský and Vojtěšský valleys meet, near Mšeno. Their unusual shape, resembling oversized mushroom caps, is the result of differential weathering of the sandstone: the upper layers, richer in iron compounds, are harder and more resistant to erosion than the rock beneath them. Over time the lower layers wore away faster, leaving the distinctive "caps" balanced on thinner stems.
What else is there to see in the reserve?
Beyond the rock formations, the valley also holds romantic ponds covered with water lilies, along with picturesque wooden buildings typical of the region. This combination of nature and vernacular architecture is why Kokořínský důl is often described as one of the most beautiful valleys in the Czech Republic. Dense forests, damp gorges and rock crevices create a distinctive microclimate here, supporting plant and animal species rarely found elsewhere in the country.
Who is this route for?
The valley draws hikers and cyclists looking for a quiet encounter with nature, as well as photographers and geology enthusiasts drawn to the unusual rock shapes. Trails through the reserve connect with the route to Kokořín Castle, making it possible to combine a walk through the rock labyrinth with a castle visit in a single day. Because the valley's ecosystem is fragile, visitors are advised to stick to marked paths and avoid climbing directly on the rock formations.
