Vodopády v Trenckově rokli

The waterfalls of Trenckova rokle tumble through a narrow rocky gorge above the Bobrůvka river, right next to the village of Drahonín. Few travelers have heard of this spot in the Vysočina region, yet it rewards visitors with a wild, mossy atmosphere rarely found so close to a bus stop.

The gorge stretches through the Bobrůvka valley, between the villages of Skryje and Strážek, close to Drahonín. Despite covering only about 19 hectares, the area is protected as a nature monument and also recognized as a site of European significance for its unusual microclimate and habitats.

A small stream runs through the rocky ravine, forming a short series of cascades and waterfalls. The highest drop reaches roughly four meters, and together with a lower step and cascade further down, the water creates a striking sequence as it falls over moss-covered rock. Flow here is seasonal — after dry spells some of the cascades can shrink to almost nothing, only to come back to life dramatically after rain.

The cool, damp microclimate at the bottom of the gorge stays fairly constant year-round, which lets plants thrive here that you wouldn't normally expect at this elevation — lush ferns, mountain mosses and maples cling to the rock walls, giving the ravine an almost alpine feel.

The gorge takes its name from Baron Trenck, a commander of Pandur troops who fought for the Habsburgs against Ottoman forces. According to local legend, he hid in this ravine after Empress Maria Theresa ordered his arrest over the looting carried out by his men.

How do you get to the waterfalls?

The starting point is the bus stop in Drahonín. From there a road leads out of the village and turns into a field track. After about 2.5 kilometers you pass the 17th-century Šafránkův mill, and from there it's a short stretch to the entrance of the rocky gorge with the waterfalls. The route isn't technically demanding, but sturdy footwear is a good idea — the gorge floor tends to be wet and slippery.

When is the best time to visit?

The waterfalls look their best right after rain — in spring or following summer storms, when the stream carries the most water and the cascades are at their most dramatic. During a dry summer the streambed can run nearly empty, so it's worth checking the rainfall forecast before setting out.
