Hrušín

Ochoz u Tišnova, Czechia

About this place

Hrušín is a natural monument located northwest of the village of Ochoz u Tišnova, in the Brno-venkov district, roughly 750 meters southwest of the village itself. Covering 12.43 hectares, the protected area preserves a near-natural lime-maple forest community with an admixture of beech, situated along a supra-regional biocorridor connecting larger forest complexes in the region. The site was declared a natural monument in 1997.

Why is this forest protected?

The reason for protection is the natural lime-maple forest community with an abundant occurrence of the common snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis), a specially protected plant species. The forest floor at Hrušín stands out for its high species diversity, and the local snowdrop population represents the largest known occurrence of the species in the neighboring Blansko district. In early spring, during flowering season, the forest floor is carpeted with dense white blooms, drawing short nature walks to the area during this period.

What else can be seen in the terrain besides the vegetation?

Hrušín is more than a valuable stretch of forest — it is also a notable landform. The ridge takes the shape of a narrow, asymmetrical crest roughly 0.5 kilometers long, with its highest point reaching 574 meters above sea level. The ridge is built of platy Bítešské phyllites (schist-like rock), and its slopes preserve periglacial relief forms of geomorphological interest — landforms shaped by frost-driven processes typical of past glacial periods. Rocky granite formations and scree fields are visible on site, evidence of intense frost weathering in the past.

Who is this place for?

Hrušín is aimed primarily at nature and geology enthusiasts who appreciate small, quiet protected areas away from mass tourism. Its proximity to Ochoz u Tišnova and the town of Tišnov itself makes it easy to combine a visit with a walk through the surrounding hills of the Vysočina Highlands or a stop in the town. The site will particularly appeal to those interested in forest-floor flora and in unusual rock formations left behind by ancient periglacial processes.
