Villa y puerto de Garachico

Garachico, Spain

About this place

Villa y puerto de Garachico is the historic town and port complex on the northwest coast of Tenerife, in the municipality of Garachico. Recognised in Spain's cultural heritage register as a Bien de Interés Cultural under the Conjunto Histórico category, it combines colonial-era architecture with a dramatic natural history and today ranks among the island's most visited old towns.

How was Garachico founded?

The settlement was established by the Genoese banker Cristóbal de Ponte at the end of the 15th century. Thanks to a sheltered natural bay, it quickly grew into Tenerife's main trading port — throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, ships sailed from here to handle commerce between Europe, Africa and Spain's American colonies. During this golden age, Garachico effectively functioned as the island's economic capital, and the wealth generated in that period still shows in the architecture of its old quarter.

What happened in 1706?

On the night of 5 May 1706, an eruption of the Trevejo volcano changed the town's fate. Flows of molten lava reached the coast, destroying a large part of the port and physically reshaping the bay's shoreline. Residents had to rebuild much of the town almost from scratch, and the port never fully regained its former commercial standing — over time, Santa Cruz de Tenerife took over as the island's main harbour.

Why is today's Garachico worth seeing?

Despite the early 18th-century disaster, Garachico's compact historic centre retained a rich stock of 16th- and 17th-century buildings and is considered one of the best-preserved and most representative historic ensembles in the Canary Islands. Its narrow streets, squares and stone façades give a coherent picture of the era when the town served as a trading gateway between continents.

This value was formally recognised with the town's inclusion on the Bien de Interés Cultural list under the Conjunto Histórico category in 1994, and Garachico has also received the Gold Medal of Fine Arts for its artistic heritage.

What should you know before visiting Garachico?

Villa y puerto de Garachico sits on the coast at approximately 28.37°N, 16.76°W, placing it in the northwestern part of Tenerife. It makes a convenient stop for travellers interested in both the Canary Islands' colonial-era history and the traces of volcanic activity that shaped the local landscape.
