About this place
Velký Roudný is an extinct volcano and the highest peak of the Nízký Jeseník (Low Jeseník) range, rising to 780 meters above sea level above the village of Roudno in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. From a distance it looks like an ordinary forested hill, but its cone-shaped profile reveals its volcanic origin — the mountain formed through volcanic activity around the transition between the Tertiary and Quaternary periods and is considered one of the youngest volcanoes in this part of the range.
What makes it worth the climb?
At the summit stands a wooden observation tower, built in 2007, roughly 20 meters tall. It's the main reason hikers tackle the steep climb up Velký Roudný. From the viewing platform, the panorama takes in the Slezská Harta reservoir at the foot of the mountain, the peak of Praděd, and — on a clear day — the entire Jeseníky mountain range. The view also includes the neighboring, slightly lower peak of Malý Roudný, with which Velký Roudný forms a distinctive pair of summits that dominates the surrounding landscape and is easily recognizable from afar.
What does the approach look like?
The trail to the summit runs through forest, mostly deciduous and mixed woodland covering the mountain's slopes. The climb is demanding because of the steep terrain, but relatively short, making it a popular destination for day trips among visitors staying near the Slezská Harta reservoir. Trails connect Velký Roudný to nearby villages and other viewpoints across the Nízký Jeseník, so it's easy to combine the summit with a longer hiking or cycling route through the region.
What can you see from the tower?
The main appeal here is the vantage point itself — the height of the volcanic cone combined with the extra 20 meters of the tower allows for views much farther than from the surrounding, lower hills. On a clear day, visibility stretches all the way to the Jeseníky range and its highest peak, Praděd, making Velký Roudný one of the better viewpoints in this part of the Moravian-Silesian Region.
Size and character of the mountain
The mountain itself covers an area of about 81 hectares. It's a small but clearly defined massif whose regular, cone-like shape is unusual for the Nízký Jeseník — the rest of the range tends to have gentler, rolling forms typical of older, heavily eroded mountains.
