Velký Kutinov

Boleradice, Czechia

About this place

Velký Kuntínov is a small nature reserve (registration no. 1232) lying southeast of the village of Boleradice in the Břeclav district of South Moravia. Covering just 11.18 hectares, it protects one of the region's rare surviving examples of a combined steppe, forest-edge and warmth-loving woodland complex.

What is the reserve protecting?

The reserve was declared in 1986 to preserve forest-steppe slopes that host the rare burning bush (dittany, Dictamnus albus). Its territory forms a mosaic of habitats, ranging from dry, sun-baked steppe grasslands, through transitional edge zones between forest and open steppe, to compact stands of warmth-loving oak woodland.

Which species live here?

The steppe and forest-steppe communities of Velký Kuntínov support numerous protected and rare plant species. Recorded here are pheasant's eye, purple orchid, the burning bush mentioned above, variegated and low bearded irises, wood anemone, and feather grass, among others. The warm, sun-exposed slopes also favor a range of insect species tied to steppe environments, making the reserve an important refuge in a region where such habitats have become increasingly scarce.

Where exactly is it located?

The reserve sits right next to Boleradice, a small town of about 890 residents best known as a wine-growing center in South Moravia. Boleradice lies northeast of Hustopeče and southwest of Klobouky u Brna, in a region famous for its viticulture and a mild, warm microclimate that also supports the growth of heat-loving steppe vegetation on the surrounding slopes.

Why is it worth a visit?

Velký Kuntínov appeals to visitors interested in nature and the rare plant communities of Moravia rather than to mass tourism. Its small size means it can be explored fairly quickly, and its proximity to the wine village of Boleradice makes it easy to combine with a visit to nearby vineyards and the hiking trails of the Ždánický les area.
