Velká Baba

Velká Baba is the highest point of the Bobrava Highlands (446 m), a forested hill lying within the cadastral territory of the village of Jinačovice in South Moravia, right in the heart of the Baba Nature Park.

Where is Velká Baba located?

The hill rises along a ridge stretching roughly 6 kilometers between the cities of Brno and Kuřim. Almost the entire central section of this ridge, including the Velká Baba summit itself, falls within the administrative land of Jinačovice, a small village of around 560 residents situated on the park's western edge. Jinačovice is the most convenient starting point for a visit, though neighboring municipalities also share parts of the park's territory.

How do you get to the top?

No marked hiking trail runs directly to the summit — one of the quirks of this modest but ecologically valuable hill. The closest routes are a green trail starting in Jinačovice or in Brno's Řečkovice district, and a yellow trail connecting Medlánky with Kuřim. From either one, hikers need to leave the marked path and cover the final stretch through the forest without a signed route, so bringing a map or hiking app is a good idea. The climb itself is gentle and doesn't require special fitness, which makes the hill a popular weekend destination for people from Brno.

What will you see at the top?

Velká Baba is densely wooded, so don't expect sweeping panoramas from the summit — clear views open up only where the forest is interrupted by power-line corridors. The real draw here is the woodland itself: Baba Nature Park, established in 1991–1992, protects valuable oak-hornbeam forests and meadows rich in plant life. On the slopes you can spot martagon lily, poisonous daphne (mezereon), large yellow foxglove, and bulbous coralroot — species typical of the fertile, lime-rich soils of southern Moravia. A walk along the ridge is therefore mostly about the forest and its inhabitants rather than the view.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring is ideal, when the forest floor is in full bloom, and early autumn offers colorful foliage and comfortable hiking temperatures. In summer, the dense canopy provides welcome shade even on hot days. In winter the trails can turn muddy and slippery, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
