Mniší hora

Brno, Czechia

About this place

Mniší hora is a 333-meter hill on the northwestern edge of Brno, within the cadastral territory of the Brno-Bystrc city district. It carries a dual identity: a protected patch of ancient forest and the unexpected birthplace of one of the city's best-known attractions.

Why is this hill protected?

Mniší hora holds a special place in the history of nature conservation in Brno — on February 11, 1950, it became the very first protected area in the city. It started out as a nature reserve covering 54.25 hectares. On November 29, 1988, its status was upgraded to a state nature reserve, and in 1992 it was reclassified as a natural monument, the designation it still holds today.

The protection targets natural and near-natural oak-hornbeam forest communities with species-rich herbaceous undergrowth. The rocky base of the ridge consists of amphibolic and biotite-amphibolic diorites belonging to the Brno massif. Geologically, the hill forms a horst bounded by faults — to the west toward the Bystrc basin, and to the east toward the Medlánky depression.

What lies at the foot of the hill?

The story of Mniší hora is closely tied to Brno's zoo. In June 1950, shortly after the hill gained protected status, construction of a zoological garden began on its grounds. The zoo formally opened three years later. Today, land that once belonged to monks — hence the hill's name, meaning "Monks' Hill" — combines the role of a nature reserve with the presence of one of Brno's most popular family attractions right at its base.

What kind of vegetation grows here?

The hill is characterized by natural or near-natural oak-hornbeam forest stands. Their herbaceous undergrowth is notably species-rich, which was the primary reason the area was placed under protection as early as the mid-20th century — well before this kind of nature conservation became standard practice in the Czech lands.

Where exactly is Mniší hora located?

The hill sits on the northwestern edge of Brno, within the Bystrc district, close to the Bystrc basin. Its approximate coordinates are 49.2391 N, 16.5359 E. Because of its natural-monument status, the area is subject to the restrictions typical of protected sites — the priority is preserving the natural forest communities rather than building tourist infrastructure.

Frequently asked questions

Can you walk up Mniší hora? The hill lies within the Bystrc district and borders the grounds of the zoo, making it easily accessible to residents and visitors exploring this part of Brno.

Where does the name Mniší hora come from? The name refers to the land's former ownership by a monastic order, before the hill was placed under nature protection and its surroundings were developed.

What is the difference between a natural monument and a nature reserve? Mniší hora has passed through both categories — a nature reserve from 1950, a state nature reserve from 1988, and since 1992 a natural monument, which is the protection category currently in force for the site.
