Velika Rujnica

Velika Rujnica is a mountain peak rising above the village of Desne in Dubrovnik-Neretva County, southern Croatia. Standing at 620 metres above sea level, it forms part of the Rujnica range, a ridge that runs parallel to the Neretva valley. It's a destination for travellers who want a scenic hike away from the coastal crowds, yet still close to the delta of one of the Adriatic's largest rivers.

Where is Velika Rujnica?

The peak sits between the villages of Desne and Sedla, north of the Neretva valley, at roughly 43.070°N, 17.546°E. Rujnica itself is an independent mountain massif stretching for about 15 kilometres, from the Jezero field all the way to the Neretvanska krajina region. Velika Rujnica isn't the highest point along this ridge — that title belongs to nearby Babina gomila (734 m) — with other named peaks including Ilija (691 m), Mala Rujnica (598 m), Varda (518 m) and Kablina (450 m) completing the chain.

How do you get to the top?

Most hikers and mountain bikers start from Desne, the village lying at the southern foot of the massif. Marked trails lead from there up into the Rujnica range, including a route connecting Velika Rujnica with Babina gomila, maintained by a local hiking club. Mountain bikers also have a dedicated MTB trail crossing the slopes and ridgelines of the massif, popular with riders exploring the area around Metković.

The Rujnica ridge offers one of the widest panoramas in the Neretva estuary region. When is the best time to visit?

Given its modest altitude and south-facing exposure, the terrain around Velika Rujnica can get hot and dry in summer, so it's worth planning a climb for early morning or late afternoon and carrying enough water. Spring and autumn bring out the Mediterranean vegetation at its greenest and offer temperatures better suited to longer routes linking several peaks along the ridge.
