V rašelinách

Oloví, Czechia

About this place

V rašelinách is a small nature reserve in the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory), located about 3 km northwest of the railway station in Oloví, in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic. The protected area covers 23.19 hectares, sits at an elevation of 664–676 metres, and was declared a nature reserve in 1990.

What makes this reserve special?

The reserve protects a natural ecosystem of bog pine forest that hosts a population of hybrids between Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and bog pine (Pinus rotundata). These hybrid pines are the main reason the site was set aside for protection: across much of the Ore Mountains, natural peatlands have been permanently altered by peat extraction or mining activity, so the area around Oloví is one of the few remaining stretches of the range where bogs have survived in a near-natural state.

The reserve itself consists of several raised bogs and transitional-type peatlands, with peat layers reaching up to 2 metres thick in places. A peat deposit of that depth points to a long, largely undisturbed accumulation process, which helps explain why the area was already recognised as worth protecting back in 1990.

Geology and hydrology

The bedrock beneath the reserve is formed by phyllites of the Svatava crystalline complex — old, strongly metamorphosed rock typical of the Ore Mountains' geology. The site lies on the watershed between the Svatava River and the Liboc Stream, and the reserve itself is the headwater area of the Liboc Stream. In practical terms, the peat bogs of V rašelinách act as a natural water reservoir, slowly storing and releasing water that feeds the stream at its very source.

Why visit?

For anyone interested in the natural history of the Ore Mountains, V rašelinách offers a glimpse of the kind of peatland landscape that once covered much larger parts of the range, before peat cutting and mining reshaped many surrounding areas. Its small size means a visit doesn't take long, but the ecosystem itself — boreal-type vegetation, the rare pine hybrids, and the thick peat layer — makes it a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in botany or geology.

Its location near Oloví, a small town in the Sokolov district, also makes it easy to combine a visit with other sights in the Ore Mountains and the wider Sokolov region.
