Kamenný hřib

Krásná Lípa, Czechia

About this place

Kamenný hřib ("Stone Mushroom") is a striking granite rock formation on a hillside near the hamlet of Krásná Lípa, above the village of Šindelová in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic. Sitting at roughly 665 meters above sea level, this mushroom-shaped boulder lies just a few hundred meters from the road junction leading toward Přebuz and Krásná Lípa.

How did this stone mushroom form?

The formation is carved from porphyritic biotitic granite belonging to the Karlovy Vary pluton. Its unmistakable mushroom shape is the result of tens of thousands of years of weathering during the Pleistocene: sharp winds carrying sand and small stones gradually abraded the softer lower rock, while the harder upper layer of granite resisted erosion and protected the stone beneath it. The outcome is a wide, flat "cap" balanced on a narrower "stem." The whole boulder stands about 3 to 3.5 meters tall, and its upper slab is a textbook example of the plate-like and block jointing typical of granite in the Karlovy Vary massif.

Why is this site protected?

On August 29, 1980, Kamenný hřib was declared a natural monument (IUCN category III), covering a tiny area of just 0.08 hectares. The protection exists to preserve this bizarre, aesthetically striking boulder as a landscape feature — a classic illustration of how granite from the Karlovy Vary massif weathers and breaks down over time. The site is managed by the Karlovy Vary Regional Authority together with the Czech Nature and Landscape Protection Agency, following a care plan in effect from 2015 to 2034 that includes regular vegetation maintenance to keep the rock's distinctive shape visible.

How to get to Kamenný hřib

The boulder can be reached on foot or by bike, either from the village itself or from the nearby Tajch pond, about 500 meters away. There is no paved path leading directly to the rock, but it is clearly visible from both the road and the cycling route that runs between Šindelová and Krásná Lípa. Access to the natural monument is free of charge, available year-round, with no opening hours restrictions.

Frequently asked questions

Are there other attractions nearby? Yes — the Tajch pond lies about 500 meters away and makes for a convenient starting or connecting point for a longer walking or cycling trip through the surrounding area.

Is there an entrance fee? No, visiting the natural monument is completely free and open all year round.
