About this place
Údolí Chlébského potoka (Chlébský Stream Valley) is a protected natural area set in a picturesque narrow valley near the village of Chlébské, in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands region of the Czech Republic. For decades the site has drawn nature lovers, especially in early spring when the valley floor turns into a sea of white blossoms.
What makes this valley special?
The valley's main natural value is an exceptionally rich, naturally occurring population of the spring snowflake (bledule jarní), a bulbous plant of the amaryllis family. This species has been under legal protection in the Czech lands since the interwar period of the First Czechoslovak Republic, making it one of the country's longest-protected wildflowers. The colony growing along the stream, within a floodplain (riparian) forest, is considered one of the most significant of its kind in the region — significant enough that in 2005 the valley was included on a list of the most important natural sites in Europe.
A history of protection
Recognition of the site's value dates back to the first half of the 20th century, when the spring snowflake itself first received species protection. Formal protection of the area as a nature reserve followed in 1953. Since then, the site has been consistently shielded from development and excessive human disturbance, which has allowed the distinctive riparian forest along the streambed to survive largely intact.
It's worth noting that a separate protected site bearing the same name — a natural monument — lies nearby, closer to the village of Černovice, near the border of the Blansko and Brno-venkov districts. Both the reserve and the natural monument protect a similar type of habitat, but they are formally distinct, separately designated areas.
Landscape and nature
The valley of the Chlébský stream is a typical landscape feature of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands: a narrow, scenic stream valley flanked by forest, with a characteristic floodplain forest running along the valley floor. It is precisely this damp, humus-rich ground beside the watercourse that provides ideal conditions for the spring snowflake, a species that depends on regularly flooded, organically rich soil. Beyond the protected flower itself, the area represents a valuable fragment of the region's forest ecosystem, contributing to local biodiversity.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Údolí Chlébského potoka? Early spring — typically March and April — is best, when the spring snowflakes bloom en masse, carpeting the valley floor in white.
Where exactly is this location? The valley lies near the village of Chlébské, in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, a region known for its many stream valleys and forests.
Can visitors move freely through the area? As a protected nature reserve, the site has restrictions in place to safeguard its vegetation. Visitors should keep to marked paths and avoid picking any protected plants.
How does the reserve differ from the nearby natural monument of the same name? They are two separate, formally designated conservation areas protecting a similar type of habitat, located not far from each other but in different parts of the region.
Why is the spring snowflake so important to this site? It was precisely because of this exceptionally rich and valuable population of the plant that the valley was placed under protection — first the species itself, and later the entire area as a nature reserve.
