About this place
Habrová is a natural monument located in the cadastral territory of Černovice in the Blansko District, South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. The protected area covers 18.52 hectares and spans an elevation range of 520 to 640 metres above sea level. Protection has been in place since 1 January 1991, with the scope updated on 2 April 1997. Habrová is classified under IUCN Category IV, meaning it is managed primarily for the conservation of specific habitats.
Why was this area protected?
The site was designated a natural monument because of its near-natural forest stands dominated by common hornbeam, accompanied by a species-rich herbaceous layer. Rock formations scattered throughout the area add a distinctive landscape character to the site. This combination of hornbeam-dominated woodland and exposed rock outcrops makes Habrová a valuable example of near-natural forest habitat in the region.
What is the geology of the area?
The bedrock consists of muscovite-sericite schist belonging to the Bítešská group. A characteristic feature of the terrain is the presence of numerous frost-weathered rock scarps, formed through repeated freeze-thaw processes acting on the schist. The soils are classified as dystric cambisols along with typical pseudogley variants, reflecting the moisture conditions and rocky substrate typical of this part of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands.
What plant species grow here?
The forest at Habrová is dominated by European beech and common hornbeam, accompanied by ash, sycamore maple, and Norway spruce. The herbaceous layer includes wood sorrel, spring pea, and several fern species. This diversity, spanning both the tree canopy and the ground-level vegetation, directly reflects the reasons the site was placed under legal protection.
What animal life can be found in the area?
Among insects, several moth species have been recorded within the natural monument. In the surrounding area, eagles and black storks have also been observed, indicating good-quality forest habitat and relatively undisturbed conditions in this part of the region.
Who manages the site?
The area is administered by the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic (AOPK ČR), which is responsible for monitoring habitat conditions and enforcing the protection regime.
